How do I begin to explain just how thrilled I am to be back with this amazing University and great athletic department? I will simply say that I am honored to have this opportunity to again be part of something so special.
The University of Pittsburgh is the perfect example of how you combine the excellence of one of the country's finest institutions with a strong, vital athletic program. You do not have to sacrifice one for the other. Our commitment to our student-athletes and our fans remains the primary mission of this athletic department. Over the next many months, we will be seeking your input and thoughts on how we can make this fine program even better.
I return to find that we continue to be fortunate to have great coaches and a great staff. Now the thrill for me is to get to know our outstanding student-athletes. Just to keep things in perspective, while we experienced great wins at West Virginia and Washington during the initial week of December, across the hall from my office are over 400 students studying and preparing for final exams. Imagine the pressure of competing at the highest levels of college athletics and still remaining focused on the excellence that we have come to expect in their academic performance. I am a great admirer of the character and determination of student-athletes.
It means a great deal to me to see the constant support for this program from each of you. Your support has been the key ingredient in the ascension of this program to high levels. I have always believed that Pitt people have been the gold standard for supporting their program for all the right reasons. I am anxious to see old friends and build relationships with newer fans and supporters.
At Pitt, there are no small dreams, only Big Dreams. Thank you for your support in allowing us to dream.
